85% of Slip Fall accidents are preventable!

One out of 200 slip and fall accidents among people aged between 65 and 69 will result to hip fracture. And the rate of such injury increases as the age of people also increases. For example, one out of 10 falls among people aged 85 years and older will result to such injury.

Two-thirds of those who have encountered slip and fall will experience the same accident within six months.

One-fourth of those who have fractured their hips will die within six months after their injury. For those who will survive, they will have a 25 percent chance of becoming permanently disabled (requiring life-long nursing care), and 50 percent chance of becoming partially disabled.

Most at risk for falls are the elderly and the children.

Older people are at highest risk of death or serious injury due to a fall, and their risk increases with age, according to the WHO. Worldwide, death rates are highest among adults 60 years and older.

Hip fractures pose an increased danger to seniors and older adults leading to injury, loss of independence, disability and premature death.

Hip fractures can have lifelong consequences for older adults including permanent disability or the potential for premature death.

Those aged 65 years and over account for almost 92% of acute public hospital costs
per bed day.  The total cost of bed days occupied by those in this age group due to falls
most likely occurring in buildings is estimated at $3,112,093,561 ($3.1 billion)

• Falls in aged care facilities cost a total $493,905,147.10, representing 14.6% of the
total building related fall injury expense for the period included in this analysis

A recent study shows that slip and fall accidents [are] the leading cause of injury-related deaths among elderly people.

According to experts, more than one-third of falls among elderly were caused by environmental hazards in homes and business establishments. While such an accident is considered by some people as a common occurrence and somewhat “unavoidable”, this usually has a legal implication especially when there is a premise liability law that requires people to maintain their properties safe—or face liability for failing to do so.
